Pepper at 10 weeks
Puppies...
They are so cute when they are young.
But soon he's big enough to jump out the window - a second floor bedroom
window at that; through the screen. I guess there was a cat outside.
When he was still young - only a year and a
half - I took a job that would require me to be gone for months at a time, at
least initially. I put him up at my folk's home, not too far
away. He had been there a number of times and always enjoyed visiting
my parents. They both liked him, but he was way too strong for either of them
to handle. Mom reported once, that while walking him he had just pulled her
over. It was at their house that he decided to jump out the window -
probably to chase a cat, but he was castrated for the act anyhow. It
was kind of them to offer to keep him for me.
When I returned, after having been
gone for 4 months, it took Pepper about 30 seconds to recognize me. He did
not bark at me as if I were a total stranger, but he wasn't all that happy
for about half a minute, then he started his barking and jumping around and
on me like it had dawned on him who I was.

Born
August 2002
We adopted Elsie from a litter of 12 at a
North Palm Springs trailer park. She looked so much like Pepper I just knew
she would be a good dog. She peed all over herself when I first picked her
up. Pepper took to her right away and treated her like his own daughter.
November
, 2004
Keeping a promise to a friend, I did not
have Elsie fixed until she had one litter of puppies. Here is her pregnant
picture She had 11 beautiful puppies

Levi 4/20/73
to 2/9/89
Good Old Levi, mostly Black Labrador, was
rescued from a Huntington Beach animal shelter at 5 weeks old. He loved to
rescue six-packs tossed into water.
He really tried to understand words. He
loved hamburgers, tomatoes lettuce and all. He also loved See's suckers. One
evening while I was out to a movie, he ate about 30 See's chocolate suckers
from off a coffee table; unusual behavior for him. It was humorous to see all
the little white sticks lying scattered on the floor. I just couldn't get
angry with him.
He and I both found out the hard way that
chocolate is poisonous to a 17 year old dog.
My brother and my Dad accompanied me to the
veterinarian and stood by as Levi was laid to rest. He had been
tortured by the liver failure for a week or 2. As his eyes closed and he went
to permanent sleep I cried a bit - my friend of nearly 17 years was
gone.

With me till the end

Regis
Regis belonged to my good friend Chuck
I first met Regis at the LAX freight office. He had just been
shipped from Cape Cod to LA, where he was to go some 80 miles to my house to
live. His cargo container was one inch too tall so his flights had been
changed without any notice to me. He had waited in strange airports for
hours before finally getting on a flight. He now barks at any 737 that
flies over :-)
Regis lived with us for a couple of years -
I forget exactly how long. The kids all loved him. He had that winning
Labrador personality. You could tell how happy he was to see you
, as when you arrived home, he would go into a dance. Happily dancing around
in about the same step. It was a Labrador Retriever dance, as my old dog Levi
did a similar thing when he was still with us.
But alas, good things do come
to an end. After Regis returned to Cape Cod with Chuck, back in Sept 99, I am
sad :-( to report that in July of 2004 was diagnosed with cancer
and Chuck had to put him to sleep.
We will miss you Regis - Continue your
little dance for Heaven's hosts!

Heyou belonged to a former roommate from Rialto, she is
a sweetheart, but quite a beggar. She never seems to get enough to eat. She
loves the high desert.

Poochie
Poochie is the name the neighborhood
children gave her when she first showed up. We think that she may have been
abandoned.
She is a full blooded Greyhound; solid black, except for a bit of white on
her chest.
She adopted the kids in the neighborhood, then she adopted my yard. Early
one morning when backing out of the driveway to go to work, I saw her lying
in my front yard. I knew then that we had to help her. We took her into our
little family for a spell. She showed her gratitude by affection for
the children and stealing a roast that was on the top of the stove cooling.
She was adopted to a nice Greek gentleman
named "Nick" [aren't they all?] who changed Poochie's name to
Laura, I had suggested it in honor of my old dog and he agreed. She now
lives in a 3 acre back yard with a swimming pool and another dog to play
with.

Pepper is a Rotwieler and Australian
Shepherd mix. [obviously no papers]
He is possibly too much the herding dog.
He loves to chase.
He will chase you down the hall and nip your butt to make you run.
Pepper and Fishing the Colorado
Below, you see Pepper fishing on the
Colorado River. He has just caught a fish -he thinks. He gets so
excited about it that when you are just casting your baited hook into the
water, he barks like you have caught something. It is unfortunate that
I catch anything so rarely, that his short memory forgets what a fish
looks/smells like and he barks at baited hooks. Or, maybe he is just so
excited that he is trying to bark the fish onto the hook. Whatever, there is
much left to write in this dog's story.
He is now 11 years old, and a great guard dog, though now a bit overweight.

Levi
sired Laura. Her mother's name was Jo. While she looked to be mostly black
lab, like her dad, she must have been part jumping dog. She could clear the
back fence of 6 1/2 feet, and not touch it. We saw her jump on the garage
roof once, a distance of about 8 feet. She could almost fly. She loved
to chase the Frisbee. She could jump twist and catch the Frisbee in the air.
The picture above does little to show , as she is really about 2 and half
feet off the ground, but you can get the idea.
Arthritis and bone cancer took their toll on her after 16 years. I rubbed
her ears the way she liked so much, as she drifted off to sleep.

Current
Best Friend Heyou actually belonged to a former roommate from Rialto

When Heyou first moved into my home in
rialto, back in 97 or so, her owner had not yet decided on her name.
When I asked him what her name was, he said "uh... I just call her uh ..
Hey You" So I took him literally. I named her Heyou.
Eventually he started calling her other things like YaYa, which is what he
was calling her when we moved away from the Rialto residence in 2003.
He had to go to a place where he could not have a dog, so he left Heyou with
us. She adapted to her new environments during this move seemingly very well.
But in about her first week in the new house, she decided that she had to get
into my room so badly, that she dug up the carpeting to get under the
door. She is an outside dog now.

Bonnie is the bold one. They are both almost
all black, but she has a touch more white on her chest than Clyde
They both have that winning Black Lab personality, especially at 5-7
months (estimated) age.
I found them abandoned in a field on the boarder between Riverside and San
Bernardino counties. I call them Bonnie and Clyde.
I am glad to report that both have been
adopted to good homes, as of 9/15/98.
